The son of Suleiman the Magnificent, II. Selim, was known as Selim the Drunk.

He had this nick name because he was a heavy drinker.

Infact it is believed tht the reason behind his conquest of Cyprus was that very nice wines were produced from the grapes grown in the vineyards of Cyprus.

As described in Ismail Hami Danişmendi’s book called Historical Truths, one day, after having his dinner and drinking wine Selim saw that there were also color grapes among the fruits brought to the his dinner table. The son of the Solomon the magnificent shouts with rage;

– Get them out of my sight!

At that time, one of the wives next to him hesitantly asked why?

Selim the Drunk replied as follows;

– I don’t want to betray my wine by eating its seeds!

Like his life, Ayyaş Selim’s death was tragic and ironic too. but that is for another article 🙂
